August 2025 Fishing Report

As we know, August can be a hit or miss month for fishing for all species. It's either too hot, not seeing fish, not enough water, etc etc. But we are rolling up to the pre-fall season which we all look forward to with the changing of the season. With that being said, here are some flies that I would recommend for this upcoming month:

Terrestrials, Terrestrials, Terrestrials!!!

It's Terrestrial season! Pack away those strike indicators (fancy word for bobber) and start chucking those hoppers, ants and beetles out. Hopper and dry droppers have been working well, especially for the bigger fish looking for some protein.

Chubby Chernobyls (purple, tan or blue) size 12-16

Schroeders Hopper (tan or olive) size 14-16

Foam ants ( black or brown) size 16-20

Foam beetles (black) size 16-20

Annual cicadas (green) size 6-8

For the droppers or for you bobber runners:

Rainbow warrior (size 18-20)

Black perdigon (size 18-20)

Cream midge (size 18-24)

Blow torch (size 18-20)

Pheasant tail ( size 16-20)

When everything else fails, fish dirty: Squirmy worms and San Juans.

Depth is the key on the droppers. Typically 3 to 4 feet of 5x to 6x Tippet from your top fly to the bottom.

Soft hackles are also a great choice. I recommend black midges with soft hackles in size 16-18.

For you dry fly purists out there, black flies and midges have been effective early mornings in size 18-24. Tan Caddis in the middle section have been effective as well in size 16 to 18.

For the streamer junkies out there, size 10 to 12 wooly buggers (olive, black or white). One of my all time favorite flies is a Krafts kreelex size 6 in gold and silver. It works well.

Don't be afraid to put in some leg work. Fish the deeper troughs with slow drifts. Adjust the depth of your flies accordingly. If you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call or email!

Tight lines!
